Colombian Premier League

The Colombian Premier League, officially known as “Categoría Primera A,” is the top professional football division in Colombia. It is organized by the Colombian Football Federation and features the country’s best football clubs. The league operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the lower division, Categoría Primera B.

The premier league typically runs through two separate tournaments each year: the first half is called the “Apertura” and the second half is called the “Finalización.” Teams compete in a round-robin format during the regular season, followed by a playoff phase to determine the champion.

Established in the 1948-1949 season, the Colombian Premier League has become a significant part of Colombia’s sporting culture, showcasing both local talent and international players. The league is known for its passionate fan base and has produced various clubs that have gained recognition in continental competitions.
